Biodegradable vs Standard Bin Liners: Is Eco-Friendly Worth the Extra Cost?

Biodegradable vs Standard Bin Liners: Is Eco-Friendly Worth the Extra Cost?

Sanitary bin liners aren't something most people think about until they're choosing a supplier — but the type of liner you go with actually has a bigger impact than it seems, both on your washroom's day-to-day upkeep and on what happens to that waste after it leaves your building. Here's how biodegradable and standard liners actually compare.

What's the Difference?

Standard liners are typically plastic bags used to line a sanitary bin, collected and replaced as part of a regular servicing visit. They're simple, familiar, and widely used — but the waste itself usually ends up in landfill in a non-biodegradable bag, sometimes for decades or longer before it breaks down.

Biodegradable liners, like the ones used in the TerraCyclic Bio Bin system, are designed to break down naturally over time. In TerraCyclic's case, the entire lid-and-bag cartridge is fully degradable and can be disposed of in general waste, rather than requiring specialised collection.

The Case for Biodegradable Liners

Lower environmental footprint. This is the obvious one — biodegradable cartridges break down rather than sitting in landfill indefinitely. TerraCyclic's system is even Carbon Footprint Accredited, recognised by the Carbon Footprint Association for helping reduce carbon emissions.

Self-contained, no external service needed. Because the cartridge system is self-contained, businesses can manage the whole process themselves — replace the cartridge, dispose of the old one in general waste, done. That's particularly useful for remote sites or locations where a regular external service visit isn't practical.

Odour control built in. TerraCyclic cartridges are self-deodorising, which helps avoid the lingering smells that can come from a bin that's gone too long between services.

Simple, hygienic handling. The lid-and-bag assembly is removed and replaced as a single unit, so there's no direct handling of waste — just swap the whole cartridge and the bin looks (and smells) like new.

The Case for Standard Liners

Lower upfront cost. Standard plastic liners are usually cheaper per unit, which matters for businesses managing tight consumables budgets across many sites.

Familiarity and availability. They're the default option most servicing providers already use, so there's no change in process for staff or contractors.

The trade-off. The environmental cost is real — standard liners typically end up as landfill waste with no breakdown, and over the life of a business, that adds up across thousands of services.

So, Is It Worth the Extra Cost?

For most businesses, the answer comes down to two things: how much sustainability matters to your brand and customers, and whether self-managed servicing (rather than relying on an external provider) suits your site. If you're running a remote location, a site without easy access to scheduled servicing, or simply want to reduce the environmental footprint of your washrooms without much extra effort, biodegradable systems like TerraCyclic are a genuinely practical upgrade — not just a feel-good label.

If cost is the primary driver and your current servicing arrangement already works well, standard liners remain a perfectly reasonable choice.
